Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, Orígenes de la NovelaSynopsis
When at the beginning of the now distant eighties of the century last year I began my research journey immersed in the study of Spanish Byzantine Novel and, more specifically, from the literary universe of the Clareo and Florisea by Alonso Núñez de Reinoso, the critical overview of This genre was certainly devastating, even more so if we compare it with the interest that other related narrative models had aroused. We only had half a dozen books and articles, short references scattered here and there, and then an absence of materials to turn to. It seemed evident that, in contrast to other narrative schemes of the Golden Age, the so-called Byzantine Novel offered little interest, surprising if we take into account that among its most staunch cultivators were two of the most prominent writers of this period.
